5 patients killed in the fire at Uday Shivanand hospital in Rajkot, 2 doctors arrested

On Wednesday, the Rajkot metropolis police arrested two more doctors of Uday Shivanand COVID Hospital. The private hospital had caught fire that has left 5 COVID-19 patients lifeless and 6 others severely injured on 27th November. There are 5 arrests happened in the case of alleged negligence by the hospital administration.

Dr Tejas Motivara and Dr Digvijaysinh Jadeja both aged 42 years had been serving in the Uday hospital that is close to Anand Bungalow Chowk in Mavdi area of the town. They both were formally arrested at 9.45 am on Wednesday.

Inspector of Rajkot taluka police station, JV Dhola, is the investigating officer in the case. He said that test for COVID-19 of the 2 doctors had been done on Tuesday. They were arrested after results of the tests came on Wednesday. They were arrested as, prima facie, in a case of negligence by the hospital administration.

Police investigations have witnessed that 4 of the patients died due to the burns and one patient died due to asphyxia. Investigation further revealed that the emergency exit of the ICU was blocked by the hospital administration. The hospital employees tried to douse the fire but weren’t skilled in firefighting. Investigation also revealed that the ICU did not had a correct air flow system as required by the National Building Code of India, 2016.

Malavaiyangar police had already filed a case in opposition to Dr Prakash Modha and his son Dr Vishal Modha, Dr Motivaras, Dr Tejas Karamata and Dr Jadeja below IPC sections 304A and 114 on November 29. Dr Praksh Modha, Dr Karamta and Dr Vishal were arrested on 30th November and had were granted bail by an area courtroom the following day.

A particular investigation workforce (SIT) that is headed by Manoharsinh Jadeja, deputy commissioner of police (zone-II) of Rajkot metropolis police, is overseeing the investigation in the case. Also, the state authorities have additionally appointed a judicial inquiry headed by Justice (retired) DA Mehta of the Gujarat High Court.
